On this hike, along with a textbook procession of conifer communities from start (low) to finish (high), there are two special rewards for flower watchers: The first, at 4 miles (and a 1900-foot elevation gain), is a large, lush meadow fed by springs, with a range of flowers at its lower end and elephant's head louseworts to paintbrushes and lupines at its upper end. The second treat is the view of the Stuart Range from Navaho Pass, at 51.2 miles. While the main rewards are still miles away, other treats entice as the trail ascends moderately along Stafford Creek in airy old ponderosa pine, standing tall and aloof above a sparse forest floor with occasional patches of tiger lilies, columbine, pipsissewa, twinflower, and pine grass.
