The Elkhorn Range has everything a mountainloving hiker could want: tall granite peaks, sparkling cirque lakes, wildflower-covered meadows, and view-packed ridges. Mountain goats scramble across the cliffs, elk roam the forests, and trout swim in the streams. Those familiar with the better-known Wallowa Mountains will find this to be a miniature version of that range, but with a smaller trail population. The Elkhorn Crest Trail travels from one end of this range to the other and does an admirable job of hitting all of the area’s many highlights.
