The name “Mountain View Lake” tells you everything you need to know about the merits of this destination. Although this pool provides the best view anywhere of Diamond Peak’s long snowy ridge, very few people go here, because the water is too shallow for fish and the small lake is not identified on any map.
As a result, the trail provides solitude and avoids the choking dust that plagues the more popular paths to nearby Diamond View and Fawn lakes. July is the most spectacular time to visit, because snow still covers the mountain and the views are at their best. Another advantage of a visit at this time is that the dense clouds of mosquitoes that follow you around will provide shade by effectively blocking out the sun (just kidding—but only a little).
