Though not as well known as the loop through the northern Seven Devils Mountains, the Southern Seven Devils have a wonderful loop trail of their own with similarly grand scenery.
This trip starts at the remote Black Lake Campground, at the end of a long, rough dirt road from the town of Council. From here, most hikers head west to Six Lake Basin, but to do the loop, you go north past the beautiful Emerald Lake, and then circle east around the craggy towers of Monument Peak and Black Imp. Excellent side trips lead to the spectacular Ruth Lake and the well-named Crystal Lake, the latter requiring a cross-county scramble.
