For most of its length, the Coeur d’Alene River is a tame stream that flows lazily through bottomlands where it is closely followed by roads. Near its headwaters, however, the river runs swift and wild through a scenic, forested canyon. A pleasant, 14-mile trail parallels this section of the river, with only one brief interruption by a logging road. The trail gives backpackers a wonderful introduction to one of the state’s best fly-fishing streams, without the crowds found elsewhere on the river. But even if you aren’t an angler, this relatively easy trail is worth hiking for the excellent canyon scenery. The stream is managed as a catch-and-release fishery; barbless hooks are required.
