Although you won’t travel into Hells Canyon, North America’s deepest river gorge, you will be able to drive for miles between the terraced basalt walls along the river north of the gorge.
Then you’ll turn inland, and follow tributary canyons into the incised benchlands and furrowed hills west of Hells Canyon. Along the way is a short side to Red Hill fire lookout (5,020 feet). On roads that range from asphalt and maintained gravel to single-lane forest and rangeland roads.
