You’ll snicker at radio reports of traffic jams in Portland, Oregon, as you make the solitary climb from Sunset Campground to a beautiful ridge high above the East Fork of the Lewis River. The is a gorgeous drive, with shady forests, high ridges, deep valleys and broad vistas that take in Mount St. Helens, Mt. Adams and Oregon’s Mt. Hood. The view from Lookout Mountain (4,222 feet) is not to be missed. Easy on the main route, which consists of gravel and native-surface roads. I rate the rough, rocky and narrow 4WD spur up Lookout Mountain moderate.
