West of the confluence of the Similkameen and Okanogan rivers rise beautiful but austere hills, bluffs, canyons and cliffs. The banks and gravel bars of the Similkameen, just to the north of this old mining and ranching road, were the focus of an 1860s gold rush. Today, the hills that flank the river, including those along this trip, remain pocked with old gold and silver mines, some of which were worked into the 20th century. Easy, on a maintained gravel road.
