Trail overall was good, the worst of it a few spots where the horse steps were quite high. The trail into Cougar from ridge was tricky in a few places where the rocks required some care. Swamp lake on the way a nice place for a lunch or short rest. Campsites at Little Cougar were closed for repair and most camping was at Cougar lake. The area is heavily used but horsemen were considerate and friendly, kept animals well away from lakes. Most folks we met were on a day hikes in and out, backpackers evenly split going into American and Cougar lakes. Cougar lake route a good warm up backpack trip just right in length and difficulty(for 68yr old). The hike to American Trail from west end of Cougar quite nice and worth the effort for scenery and flowers. Warning: Plenty of Deet is a must from Swamp lake on.
