Dazzling views of majestic Mount Persis and Mount Index, and the sublime beauty of the South Fork Skykomish River valley are offerings for the adventuresome hiker who reaches the end of this obscure Forest Service road. Speeding through Baring, elevation 790 feet, on US Highway 2 at 60mph does not offer the driver or passengers an appreciation of the surrounding landscape. For a bird’s-eye view, take a short drive, followed by an even shorter hike, on FS Road 6028. This old Forest Service road offers an opportunity to see some magnificent country, and is open year round either for hiking or snowshoeing.
