Why would anyone choose an abandoned road with modest views instead of the “real” Johnson Ridge trail, with in-season flower fields and at all seasons exciting views of the Monte Cristo Peaks, Glacier Peak, and a view into the Eagle Rock roadless and trails area?
The best reason for walking these abandoned roads is solitude, virtually guaranteed. Or maybe just because it’s there. Furthermore, the nearby Johnson Ridge trail is open to motorcycles. While 4.5 miles one way is a days’ recreation for a hiker, it represents only a half-hour ride to a motorcyclist, and isn’t worth the effort of driving to the trailhead. However, if you were unlucky enough to arrive at the Johnson Ridge trailhead on a day when motorcycles were present, one of these abandoned roads might look very attractive.
