This is a tough and wonderful training run for mountainous 100-mile races. It will also impress your friends. Traveling over six summits and doubling back over them in 34 miles gives the experience of long climbs on tired legs. Make sure you have enough daylight for the trip, and plan to be out before your car is locked behind the High Point parking lot gate (times posted at gate). Scott Jurek, who won the 1999, 2000, and 2001 Western States 100 Endurance Run, uses this route to train. With a car stationed near the South Tiger Mountain trailhead you could do 17 miles and six summits, still a formidable task, but you would miss the incredible climb up the back side of Middle Tiger. Take the map and the list of trails under Significant Trail Landmarks.
