Butterflies and wildflowers—look for one, you’ll find the other. On the Prairie Appreciation Day’s guided nature walks, look for the nearly twenty species of butterflies that prefer prairie plants. You'll also learn about a unique area of Washington, the Mima Mounds. Prairie Appreciation Day kicks off at Littlerock Elementary School at 8:00 A.M. with arts and crafts activities and booth displays by other conservation groups. The first guided nature walks leave for the three different sites soon after. Join docents for a walk to see butterflies, birds, and early May wildflowers such as shooting stars (red-purple), buttercup (yellow-gold), and death camas (white). Fields of common camas (deep blue-violet) blanket the area in early May. Eight other species of wildflowers bloom from mid-May to late July.
