This loop travels past Shadow Lake, over the first hump of Burroughs Mountain, to an overlook of the Emmons Glacier. Great for kids and adults alike, this hike explores the scenic area around the Sunrise Complex. You walk along Sourdough Ridge, climb to the first hump of Burroughs Mountain, and look over the Emmons Glacier. It is rare to cover such a wide range of landscapes and see such incredible views in such a short hike. Walk up the paved path to the right (east) of the restrooms until you see a dirt trail on your right heading north. Get on the trail and walk until you come to the junction with the Sourdough Ridge Nature Trail. Turn left (northwest) onto the nature trail and walk 0.2 mile to the Sourdough Ridge Trail. Turn left (west) onto the Sourdough Ridge Trail. While you are walking along this trail, you can see the Cascades to your right; on really clear days you can even see Mount Baker. Mount Rainier also looks magnificent from Sourdough Ridge.
