A short day hike in the Fremont National Forest. Hike the moderate to steep trail through a forest of ponderosa pines and hemlock, emerging into the open near the summit. The crest is blanketed with rocks and wildflowers. There’s also a fire lookout, which you’ll reach at 1.5 miles. The lookout is occupied from mid-June through mid-October. There’s an outhouse near the summit.
From the lookout there’s a wonderful 360-degree view. You’ll see south to California’s Mount Shasta, 125 miles away. To the north see Mount Jefferson, about 123 miles as the eagle flies. You’ll see many other Cascade peaks, including the Three Sisters, Mount Thielsen, and Diamond Peak. Nearby highlights include Christmas Valley and many other high desert areas. Special attractions: Grand views from the lookout; wildflowers atop summit.
