A major crossing plus a short climb to a one-of-a-kind hot spring, above the wrong side of the Salmon River. Requires a raft and life jackets. No need for a swimsuit. From beaches on the north side of the river, paths zigzag up to join the main trail not far from the old tram. The trail makes a beeline up the grassy hill, then curves in through a stretch of midsummer blackberries and bouncing grasshoppers. Keep an eye peeled for poison ivy and rattlesnakes. One more long shadeless stretch takes you around a bend and into a small ravine, where you’ll find what you’ve come this far to discover.
