A glacier-scraped rock point and a lighthouse at San Juan Island’s Cattle Point Lighthouse Recreation Site separate a Department of Natural Resources interpretive center and picnic area. Children can walk the gravel beach out to the rock point and then climb up the sand dune hill to the old lighthouse to complete the loop. Whale watching is superb during the summer months, as evidenced by a constant flotilla of whale-watching boats. The sweeping view is of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Haro Strait, Lopez Island, Port Townsend, Port Angeles, and the Olympic Mountains. There are numerous trails at American Camp to explore, making this an ideal spot for a weekend of fun. Be certain to check the ferry schedule before you go, and remember that on sunny summer weekends, the wait for the ferry can be long. Reservations for camping on the island should be made well in advance for the best chance of getting a spot.
