A short, steep trail runs east from San Juan Island’s English Camp through second-growth forest and up Young Hill to afford the kids a spectacular view of bays and coves of its northwest end. The effort to reach it is well worthwhile. Along the way, look for a nineteenth-century cemetery for the seven British soldiers who died of natural causes during the Pig War. A hundred feet from the top, find an interpretive display that names the sights you see below. Be certain to check the ferry schedule before you go, and remember that on sunny summer weekends, the wait for the ferry can be long. Reservations for camping on the island should be made well in advance for the best chance of getting a spot.
