This level forest and waterfront trail will entice children along the shoreline of San Juan Island’s Garrison Bay and around Bell Point to a low bank picnic area with a view of Westcott Bay. Tell them to watch for eagles and osprey when the tide is low. The birds pick up exposed clams for their dinners, then swoop upward and drop them on the rocks below to crack them open. For information on digging your own shellfish on Bell Point shores, check with rangers for permits, locations, and limits. If the tide is out, you can also reach Bell Cove along the beach. Little wild blackberries in season are another temptation. Be certain to check the ferry schedule before you go, and remember that on sunny summer weekends, the wait for the ferry can be long. Reservations for camping on the island should be made well in advance for the best chance of getting a spot.
