This 4.6-mile out-and-back day hike surveys the destruction and subsequent natural revegetation of an area in the Mount Saint Helens National Volcanic Monument caught in the crosshairs of the 1980 eruption that devastated this region. The entire hike is open, winding through former forests obliterated by the blast. From Norway Pass, you’ll get head-on views into the crater of the mountain, across Spirit Lake. Climb another mile to the summit of Mount Margaret for even better views.
