Climb just under 8 miles to the Olympic Peninsula’s largest concentration of alpine lakes and tarns, perched high on the north slopes above the Sol Duc River Valley. Spend a day fishing the lakes, or explore the lake-filled basin or the inspiring views over the vast Pacific Ocean more than 5,000 feet below you from the summit of nearby Bogachiel Peak. While the Olympic Peninsula has much to offer hikers—wild beaches, flower-filled meadows, grand forests—the region seems curiously lacking in lakes, especially considering how much rain falls here. Perhaps that’s why the Seven Lakes Basin, withthe largest concentration of lakes in the Olympics, has become such a coveted destination for hikers.

Seven Lakes is a great hike and well worth the efforts you'll give to get there. It's also popular with day hikers and overnighters so don't expect a solitary experience. Be sure you reserve camp sites in advance; they are well monitored by park rangers and fill up. For 3 days of hiking (and no advanced permit reservations) we elected to due Mink Lake (~4mi,night 1) to Sol Duc camp (~14mi,night 2)and 8mi out. This 26mi hike takes you through a great sampling of the diverse terrain, views and climates the Seven Lakes basin offers (including the seven lakes themselves).
