I took my family to the area last weekend (mid July 2007). It's a long drive in, but the hike is very enjoyable and my 6-year old did great with 11 pounds on his back. We camped at Silver Lake. Fishing was mediocre. Swimming was fantastic. Same with Gold Lake, which we hiked up to on day 2.
Huckleberries are flourising on the south side of the butte, and wartle berries were in good supply.
Crowd was small for such a short hike. Two guys were at Silver, but only for one night. No other overnighters but us after that. Two fishermen came in just to fish in the evening.
Bugs were pretty bad. Fire restriction is in place -stoves only.
Overall - great trip for kids. Not too long, yet good scenery, swimming and berry picking. Moose and deer near camp.
Multiple trees have fallen across the trail within the first half mile of the trailhead, though passable without too much effort.
