This is a short day hike or overnighter through a lightly used and surprisingly-lush area of the Colville National Forest. Hoodoo Canyon, which is near a popular developed campground, holds a cold, clear lake and a small world of wonders that seem to have been tucked away for hikers to explore. Hoodoo Canyon is narrow with numerous rock outcroppings. The trail skirts the edge of the canyon, then descends at a trail junction, switchbacking the last 0.2 mile to Emerald Lake at 3,200 feet. Although the lake is a clear and cold 10–15 feet deep in early spring, it can dwindle to a small pond by late summer. Campsites are available only when water levels are down.
