Farmers in this region of sagebrush and wheat fields still wonder what in blazes brings hikers to Odessa, Washington. And hikers who come in the heat of August will wonder why, too. In March, April, or May, however, the attraction is more obvious, as the desert blooms in this 12,000-acre stretch of rangeland secured by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in the 1990s. Walk through sweet-smelling sagebrush, past secluded ponds, and in and out of shallow coulees lined by basalt columns. The area is part of the channeled scablands carved by Ice Age floods. Most hikers will want to tackle this trail one way, starting from Odessa and hiking north to where a shuttle vehicle has been left at the Lakeview Ranch parking area near Pacific Lake. Be aware that hunters could be working this area from mid-October through early January.
