This hike provides astounding views of Idaho’s rooftop with ample climbing opportunities. The most difficult part of the hike is the long walk up the road through open sagebrush country to get to the trailhead. This is best done in the morning before the sun begins beating down. Once you hit the trailhead at 8,600 feet in elevation, the climb is generally steeper—but so many new sights arise at each bend that it is much more engaging. While you begin the ascent through the forest, water begins trickling down Sawmill Gulch. The trail continues to follow the stream over scree slopes and through forests of pine and aspen. A nice fl at bench of forest at 9,600 feet elevation and approximately 1 mile from the pass trailhead has nice places for camping or resting.
