Highpoint rank by height: 31st. As you drive up Mt. Greylock, watch for (and yield to) hikers making their way up and over the top as they hike along the Appalachian Trail (AT). There are numerous trails in this area to enjoy — and you don't have to commit to hiking the full length (2,160 miles/3,456 km) of the AT! There is a dramatic granite tower on the top of the peak, crowned by a bronze and glass sphere. This War Memorial Tower honors the men and women of Massachusetts who died serving our country. The historic Bascom Lodge, built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) is also located on top of Mt. Greylock. The views from Mt. Greylock are spectacular. Henry David Thoreau, after he stood on the summit, noted... “It was such a country as we might see in dreams, with all the delights of paradise.”

The road to the summit is closed. It closed on March 2007 and wll remain closed through 2009. The only way to the summit is to hike.
