This challenging climb scrambles up and through two Sonoran eco-stems to the top of Picket post Mountain. There you '11 find a panoramic view of the entire southern Tonto, plus a little red mailbox. The trail up this mountain is not an official Forest Service trail and requires some route finding and a fair bit of guts. From the Picketpost trailhead, you'll start south on the Arizona Trail (AZT), whose passage through the trailhead parking lot is well marked.
This recently improved section crosses a couple of washes before intersecting a jeep trail. At the jeep trail, less than 1 mile into the hike, leave the AZT and go left (east). The jeep road winds straight up the hills toward the mountain until it dead-ends at the secondary trailhead for the summit trail about I mile past the parking lot. Outstanding features: Big and weird cacti, extraordinary views, cool rock formations, and a little red mailbox full of thoughts.
