Explore a chain of pristine alpine lakes at the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon. It’s a favorite hike for families and couples in search of remote mountain scenery, fir-scented woods, and photogenic lakes—all within 30 minutes of your car. Lake Mary may be the most popular alpine hike in the Salt Lake area, with hundreds of hikers enjoying its beauty on any given summer Saturday, but only a small percentage of those hikers go on to Lake Martha or Lake Catherine, where you can often find yourself completely alone. The section from just below Lake Mary to Lake Catherine is part of the Great Western Trail.
