A new section of trail offers an alternative to the popular route to the top of Mt. Rose, requiring about the same effort but with far fewer people. The first couple of miles share the same route to the waterfall on Galena Creek on the way toward Mt. Rose, but then this trip follows the Tahoe Rim Trail (TRT) to Relay Ridge. From there, a recently constructed 0.7-mile lateral makes a switchbacking climb along a ridge to the summit of Mt. Houghton and a wide-ranging view of the northern Sierra.
