Starting near one major Tahoe ski resort and ending near another, hikers along this trip will experience some beautiful scenery and perhaps a healthy dose of solitude. Away from the resorts and the extremely popular Five Lakes Basin, the middle section of this route sees limited foot traffic, despite the close proximity to population centers and the easy access. With only a 6-mile car shuttle between trailheads, avoiding the backtracking of the typical out-and-back trip is fairly painless. Pleasant campsites near the headwaters of Middle Fork American River and along Whisky Creek make this trip well suited for a weekend backpack; several trip extensions are also possible.
