This is a very nice off-road drive/hike, if it is the one we do. We call it the old Ranger's Cabin trail, and we start out at the security checkpoint on the highway south of the Dam (about where the book says to start). Instead of stopping at what at first looks like the road's end, we make a u-turn and continue following the road down a gully and then along a wash about another 2-3 miles until we reach the real end (this is an apporved road). Then it's an easy 1 mile hike down a canyon to the remains of an old ranger's cabin on the river used in the 1930s. It's a great place to view the river. There are usually plenty of birds in the river, and big horn sheep are quite common along the road and on the cliffs in the canyon. If your dog chases things, please keep him on a leash! He could get into pretty hairy situations on the cliffs.
