This is a nice trail if you enjoy bird-watching, but other than that it isn't much in terms of wilderness. For the entire journey you can hear the cars on eithe Lake Drive or Del Dios Hwy, really the trail just follows these roads along the lake. There were also a lot of people using the trail, so if you like solitude this isn't the trail for you.
Note: trail south of Del Dios is closed due to fire damage. We joined with another family to explore parts of this trail adjacent to the community of Del Dios. A great place for kids to play, to explore and to have a picnic. Several short side trails take you down to the lake shore. Ducks, grebes, coots, cormorants and other birds are plentiful and easily seen. Bring your binos. We looked under a few logs and found some salamanders (Garden slender salamanders: check out this website to identify herps: http://californiaherps.com) that thrilled the kids. It's certainly not wilderness but it is scenic, relaxing and a good romp by the lake.
