Hiking the Redwood Coast

The trail guide is very accurate in the description of the hike, but it can't be overstated how wonderful this little hike is to take. We caught sight of several deer at Whitaker Flats, outlined by the large rock outcropping nearby.
The pines were particularly fascinating in that they were draped with long strands of moss which created a dark curtain which, with the density of the trees, made that section of the hike deeply shaded.
At times the trail is a bit difficult to follow since the area is rarely frequented and I imagine deer and other critters make their own across the grassy meadows. That being said, don't expect to get lost because you're never far from sight of Hwy 1, the Whitaker campground and the park's access roads.
It should be noted that there are bathrooms at the campground which are very convenient.
After finishing the hike, be sure to walk westerly towards the beach by crossing under Hwy. 1.
It's not a "destination hike" but if you're in the area, be sure to stop and enjoy this entry into the varied terrain offered in this portion of the coast.
