The sunny Middle Fork Trail offers fine scenery with good views of the Great Western Divide, Moro Rock, Castle Rocks, Alta Peak, and the river canyon. After an exposed 2.8-mile hike, the shady grotto of Panther Creek is a welcome respite above a dramatic, 100-foot waterfall. Before the Buckeye Flat Campground opens, usually in late March, you will have to walk an additional 1.3 miles on the road to access the trailhead. In the foothills zone, hikers should be on the lookout for poison oak, ticks, and rattlesnakes.
