At 18 miles, the newly built Rim to Reno Trail is a long hike by most standards. However, for those up to the task, the scenery is outstanding. Once past the popular Mount Rose Trail, solitude through the Mount Rose Wilderness is almost guaranteed. Seldom-seen views from the west side of the Carson Range are superb. Back on the east side, a sometimes steep drop into Thomas Creek canyon offers additional scenic delights, especially in fall when vast stands of quaking aspens turn a brilliant gold. Water is scarce away from Galena, Bronco, and Thomas Creeks, especially on the long traverse in the middle of the trip, so plan on carrying extra water.
