Sprawling just south of San Francisco, San Bruno Mountain is the perfect park for a quick get-out-of-town hike. This 3.5-mile loop climbs through coastal scrub to a ridge, where views include the mountains of Marin and San Mateo counties. After cresting near the mountain’s summit, the hike descends back to the trailhead, offering San Francisco and Mount Diablo views all the way downhill.

A simple non-technical walk that is easily completed within the three hours. I went in November and never met another person bar a group of mountain bikers. The weather was perfect for walking at this time of year. The walk is easily covered and could be considered for active children, though there are numerous mountain lion sightings and so you might want to keep a close reign on the kiddies. The views are not in the league of Tahoe or Yosemite, but are pleasant and there are many shady forest sections to be discovered. A nice walk for a bit of Sunday morning exercise. Dr. M
