A good introduction to the Hill Country State Area, this figure eight can be tailored to your limits. The first half is easy, and the second, more challenging. You’ll see wildlife and explore a corner of the park’s more remote regions, returning via the foothills of Twin Peaks. This figure-eight loop eases you into the rugged hiking available at the Hill Country State Natural Area, an outstandingly beautiful preserve near Bandera. The outward portion makes a gentle, undulating descent along Trail 1 for the first mile or so, then climbs up to meet the end of Trail 6, which returns through rougher territory.
