This hike through the Bauer Unit of Guadalupe River State Park takes you into virgin Ashe juniper woodlands, descends to a grove of ancient oaks, and then loops around a grassy meadow. This still little-known section of the other wise popular park has no river access and is moderately hard to get to, which means it’s perfect for a quiet trek through nature. Unmentioned on the park’s website, the Bauer Unit is 661 acres of untouched juniper forest and savanna north of the Guadalupe River and deep in the ranching country on the border of Comal and Kendall Counties. The unit’s remote location and lack of facilities are a deterrent to casual park visitors who simply want to unwind by the river. But for hikers and off-road bikers, it is an exciting destination.
