This pretty hike over Turkey Pass at the Enchanted Rock State Natural Area avoids the crowds seeking the summit of Enchanted Rock. It travels along Sandy Creek, passes Frog Pond, and circles around the breathtaking pink-granite mountains that make the area so unique. This hike climbs over Turkey Pass and around the less-traveled eastern end of the Loop Trail, taking you close to Turkey Peak, Freshman Mountain, and Buzzard’s Roost, the craggier mounds to the east of Enchanted Rock. The scenery takes in all the different ecologies of the park–creek floodplain, mesquite grassland, sparse oak forest, and pink granite. Turkey Pass, which you will come to before you hike a mile, is the high point at 1,536 feet above sea level; from there, your route makes a long descent back to the creek valley. Heavy use of the park has resulted in many bootleg trails; the official trails, which you should stick to, are marked with low wooden posts inscribed with an arrow and a white plastic diamond. Get used to looking for this sign, as certain sections of the hike are hard to follow.
