Trail was clearly marked for the most part. The forestry folks are doing work to it. The burn area was covered in pink wild flowers and it was spectacular. Bring lots of water as it is at leat 7.9 miles to reliable water (the south fork). Found some water at 36 04.572N 118 06.266W and again at 36 06.453N 118 05.416W but these seemed seasonal and subject to the amount of spring run-off. Over all a pleasant trail up to the Kern. I did an up and back becuase this was my first hike in a few years. The trail head is a good 10 miles past the fire station. Stay on the paved road keeping right and approx 3 miles past the phone company and Grumpy Bear you will see a large trailhead sign at which point some off roading is necessary.
