Great, great trail. Loved all of it, but be forewarned that the northern alternate route through Tamarack Valley is no longer open all the way through.

Nice day hike if you are visiting Palm Springs and don't mind paying $21.95 to take the Tram up.
The trail through the Tamarack valley up to the Peak trail does not exist anymore so you can not take that way back down.
You have to find your own way up boulders the last couple hundred feet after the trail ends to reach the Summit, but it is not difficult.
The current elevation on the summit sign is 10,834 feet.
Highway 2 was closed before we got to the trailhead but the parking area we ended at was a place where the Pacific Crest Trail crosses the road so we just hiked part of it instead. Had a great day.
