This trail winds along a portion of the Little Missouri River, with outstanding views of waterfalls, wildlife, and hardwood and old-growth pine trees. The Albert Pike Recreation Area, located about 45 miles southwest of Hot Springs, is one of the most popular spots in the Ouachita National Forest. The site is named after Albert Pike, who is remembered primarily as an officer of the Confederacy and a prolific writer. The countryside around Albert Pike Recreation Area is extremely beautiful, with the Little Missouri River, cascading waterfalls, rock outcroppings, scenic views, and swimming holes. And the hiking trails run right through it all.

I have done this trail several times....it is a good easy trail either direction...north to south is downhill mostly...good trail for beginners lots of water the whole way...three crossings above Albert Pike and two below can be dangerous in high water...but lots of fun...for getting rugged one can continue on to the Eagle Rock Loop...Athens-BigFork which is extremely rough...makes the Little Missouri look like a walk in the Park so to speak

This is a beautiful trail, and a fairly easy hike as well. there are a few places where the trail gets a little steep and narrow. The scenery is second to none for this part of the state. There are several nice places to camp alongside the river with beatiful views of the crystal clear water and good swimming as well (unless you go in December like I did). With a good filter (MSR Miniworks EX) the river water tastes better than any bottled water I've ever had, in fact I filled up my hydration bladder and every nalgene I had, and raided my car for a few more empty bottles as well! This trail is a must hike in my opinion, and the fact that it can also be combined with the Athens-Big Fork (one tough trail) and the Viles Branch Trail as part of the Eagle Rock Loop makes it all the better, 3 nice trails in a row, without ever having to cover the same ground twice! I'll be hiking this trail again as soon as I can.
