This trail loops up along the ridge of Short Mountain and shares part of its path with the Ouachita Trail. The Jessieville Ranger District, together with its sister office, the Winona Ranger District, was recognized in 1995 as the Southern Region “Ranger District of the Year” for its leadership in natural resource management. Knowledge is the cornerstone of a good environmental program, and the staff at the Jessieville Visitor Center are eager to share their considerable knowledge with the public. A comprehensive set of Audubon field guides about various flora and fauna occupy a prominent place in the office. Even going to the rest room is an edifying experience because the walls are lined with posters identifying insects, birds, trees, and leaves.

The trail was very well defined in some places it was not really well marked but easy enough to find your way. I hiked the opposite direction given in the guide and went straight to the summit from Iron Springs picnic area. The climb to the top was pretty tough but the view made it worth the effort. The path ran along hwy 7 for about a mile from the Hwy 7 TH for the Ouachita trail, this was not a really pleasant hike and takes away points. Where Hunt's loop and the OT join up, the Moonshine shelter is only about a mile out and is worth the trip for a place to stop and have lunch.
