Hiking the San Francisco Bay Area

Mud. Mud. Mud. And, oh, more Mud. Granted we visited in the height of the rainy season, but as so many other experienced hikers have noted in the past: East Bay Parks have cows. Cows use the trails. Cows make the trails brutally messy and muddy. Las Trampas was no different. Having said all that, this trail was a definite challenge. While only at 6.5 miles, there is no "level" stretches during the entire hike. The eTrail marks it as "moderate to difficult". In our experiences hiking every park we can find in the past number of years, we ranked this particular hike as difficult times two. Still, when you reach the very top of the ridge, the views are incredibly cool. Oh, a final note, if you see hordes of people during the first stretch, don't worry. After you make the left turn onto Upper Trail, the people are long gone. Afte that first mile we came across maybe one other person and that was in the distance. This one was tough but nothing hugely spectacular. A one time visit in our book.
