Despite being at the head of a beautiful drainage and surrounded by impressive granite cliffs, Sugar Pine Lake doesn’t get as many visitors as one might expect. The lake isn’t really on the way from anywhere, so it tends to get less hike-by traffic than some other Trinity Alps’ destinations. Add a steep approach (the trail climbs more than 3,500 feet, most of it in the first 4 miles) and more steep hiking to go anywhere beyond the lake, and you get a rather lonely outpost. Highlights: A steep hike to an isolated granite cirque sheltering Sugar Pine Lake; optional loop with incredible views.
