About 4 miles in you arrive at one of the most significant ruins in Cedar Mesa—the Seven Kivas Ruin. The ruin is impressive, but more so if you are familiar with the meaning of kivas to the Anasazi. Reading up on the Anasazi and their rituals before hiking Road Canyon will greatly heighten your experience. Kivas were the center of Anasazi ceremonial life. A single kiva could serve several families. Seven kivas in a single location indicates that this spot was especially sacred, perhaps serving as a spiritual center not only for those living in the immediate vicinity, but also for a larger, more regional area. The kivas are well preserved, with the log roof timbers still in place and the slip (paint) still on the inside walls.
