The Shay Ridge Trail is a beautiful mountain hike that gives incredible vistas of Canyonlands to the northwest and Cedar Mesa to the southwest. Parts of the trail are open to ATVs, so these sections are fairly wide and smooth. Other sections, particularly at the far end of the loop hike, are infrequently traveled and consequently less distinct. The Shay Ridge Trail goes northwest, climbing about 600 feet to nearly 11,000 feet in the first mile on an old jeep road. You top out, then drop down through the trees. The area is a haven for wildlife, including deer, elk, falcon, owl, and wild turkeys. Along with wildlife, also note a unique pink skyrocket, rosehips, and a large variety of wild mushrooms.
