Beginning at the corral, head west down the well-marked trail. You will be walking the first 2 miles or so in a wide, open canyon. Notice the large boulders on the canyon floor that have dropped from high above. About 1.5 miles down the trail, a small trail cuts off to the right toward one of the fallen boulders. Follow this trail to a panel of pictographs. The majority of them are on the side facing the trail. The mileage added by the cutoff is negligible and well worth your time. Soon the walls begin to creep in on top of you, narrowing down to just 6 to 8 feet apart at times. The canyon winds through the Kayenta sandstone, narrowing and then widening. Once in, there are very few ways out, so take necessary precautions to avoid flash floods.
