Forbidding Canyon is an excellent hike in warmer weather. Simply follow the narrow canyon upstream. Aztec Creek, a perennial stream, offers good clean water (always filter!). Partway up the canyon is a technical obstacle, a 25-foot friction slab from a ledge down to the creek and back up the other side. Most hikers will have no problem, but a rope may help the inexperienced. There are numerous deep pools, slots carved into the canyon floor, and a 50-foot cascading waterfall, all of which can be enjoyed, then easily bypassed. The water in the pools is always cold, but it’s refreshing during hotter weather. You can follow the canyon for many miles and explore the various side canyons, but the most spectacular scenery occurs in the first 3 or 4 miles (depending on the water level).
