Although a short day hike to the top of Quandary Canyon is possible, the full hike is highly technical. Attempt Quandary Canyon only if you’re prepared for a physically and mentally challenging day and have the following skills: rock climbing, rappelling, routefinding, and the ability to swim deep potholes. Bring your rappelling and climbing gear, including a harness, belay device, 30 feet or more of webbing, 150 feet of rope, and 25 feet of accessory cord. Climbing shoes and a bolt kit are highly recommended. Follow the double track from the pullout southeast to an old blue car. Look up to the southwest toward a notch high above in the upper Wingate layer of the sandstone cliffs. Head west up the small drainage toward the notch. Soon you’ll spot an old graded roadbed crossing under the notch and heading south. Follow the road until it tops out and passes through a narrow opening in the sandstone.
